Why Winter Suits a Romantic Cotswolds Trip

The magic of the Cotswolds has always been its atmosphere - honey-stone villages, open fires, slow lunches in country pubs - and winter is when that atmosphere is at its height. Shorter days mean less pressure to fill an itinerary and spend more time just being together: a late breakfast, a walk to the next village, a long pub lunch. With the summer crowds all gone you'll often find you've got the footpath or the village to yourselves, and you'll be able to get the cosy table next to the fire in most of the pubs.

The Best Cotswold Villages for a Romantic Winter Walk

Bourton on the Water is at its quietest in winter, meaning you can walk hand-in-hand along the riverbank and enjoy the iconic views without anyone interrupting. In December, the only thing blocking the views will be the Christmas tree in the river!

The Slaughters (Upper and Lower) are a short, gentle walk from Bourton and are some of the most picture-postcard villages in the whole area. On the loop from Bourton you can also stop off at Hawkstone Brewery for a drink on the way back.

Guiting Power is a short drive from Bourton on the Water but punches above its weight: a proper village green, two cafes and two pubs to choose from and the cutest honey-stone streets to wander through.

Naunton rewards a short detour from Guiting Power to walk one of the more unspoilt stretches of the Windrush valley - this is perfect for a longer winter walk where you won't see another soul.

Things to Do on a Couple's Winter Break

• A fireside pub lunch. Winter is when Cotswold pubs are at their absolute best. Low beams, exposed stone, real log fires and hearty menus of homemade pies and piled-up Sunday roasts - and quiet enough that you can hole up all afternoon. For us, this is so much better than in the summer!

• Crowd-free walking. This is your chance to see popular villages like Bourton on the Water and Bibury without the photo-bombing crowds. Take your time wandering the streets and enjoy the pretty views all to yourself. Taking short loop walks over the fields between villages - ending with a long pub lunch - is what winter walking in the Cotswolds is all about.

• Independent shopping. Mooching around the Cotswolds towns with a coffee in hand is a wholesome way to spend a winter afternoon. Nearby towns like Stow on the Wold and Moreton in Marsh are full of bookshops, delis, antiques and local makers.

When to Go

November and December are cheerful and festive, with lots of local crafts markets and independent shopping to do, twinkly lights along the streets and stop-you-in-your-tracks wreaths on the doors.

January and February are quiet and calm - less "let's do it all" and more "let's do nothing much, together". These months are better suited to a restful trip than a festive one, and often the best value time of year to visit.
